A Dose of Sanity: SCOTUS Refuses to Make Texas Prison Pay for Sex Change

Any doctor who surgically mutilates someone to make that person appear as the other gender should lose his license. It’s immoral to take advantage of someone’s mental illness to make a profit off of harming a person like that. We accept that when someone with body dysmorphia wants a doctor to cut off a healthy arm or leg, but not when someone with gender dysmorphia wants a doctor to cut off his penis. It’s bizarre.

Of course, we have gone farther than that and are increasingly looking for ways to force the state to pay for the hundred thousand dollars plus required to make someone appear to be a member of the opposite sex. Well, the Supreme Court has injected a dose of sanity into this whole conversation.

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear an appeal by a convicted murderer who filed a civil rights lawsuit because Texas prison officials denied her request to be considered for gender reassignment surgery.

The justices let stand a lower court’s decision to reject the claim by inmate Vanessa Lynn Gibson that denying the surgery request violated the Eighth Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.
